The systems and networking team at Microsoft Research Cambridge in collaboration with the Microsoft Research lab in Bangalore, have been working in the area of white spaces and most recently on a project called WiFi Over Narrow Channels (WiFi-NC). This makes efficient use of white spaces at faster speeds solving the interference issue. The team has developed a new radio system called ‘the compound radio’ that will make more efficient use of the entire range of radio spectrum especially in white spaces where free spectrum may be fragmented. It also addresses the questions and concerns about interference raised by the TV industry and regulators regarding the use of white spaces.
