Advancing Environmental Understanding: the Role of eScience

Environmental scientific research must adapt to a variety of changes, such as the growth of complex and massive datasets, and challenges in keeping the public and policy makers accurately informed. New types of applications are required to help scientific researchers progress from raw discovery, to knowledge, to informing practical decisions. To make credible scientific study and policy decisions, we need a solid understanding of environmental changes-ranging from the perspective of neighborhoods, to regions, to worldwide.

This session from eScience Workshop 2011 includes examples of environmental topics that are the focus of scientific investigation-and related challenges. It also identifies technologies and tools that can help researchers find answers.
