As computing hardware becomes more powerful, user interfaces will take advantage of this performance for rich media experiences and fluid game-style interactivity. Today, complex interfaces can be difficult for research teams to prototype.

This session of the 2005 Microsoft Research Faculty Summit looks at future visual interfaces and toolkits from two directions. First, Microsoft Software Architect Greg Schechter presents Microsoft’s new Avalon platform for user interface (UI) definition and accelerated rendering and provides a demo of interfaces that use this technology. Then, Steven Drucker from Microsoft Research presents his current UI explorations for rich media consumption and photo access as well as other relevant projects from the Microsoft Research NextMedia group.
