eHeritage Program Collaboration with Dunhuang Academy

The valuable historic artifacts from the Chinese Dunhuang Grottos—which include preserved caves, statues, murals, and manuscripts—are vulnerable to damage caused by environmental events and human contact. As part of the Microsoft Research Asia eHeritage program, Microsoft Research worked with the Dunhuang Academy to develop a Gigapixel Camera system that digitally captures high-resolution, large-format images and resolves details not visible to the naked eye. The highly-detailed, three-dimensional images captured by the Gigapixel Camera enables the Dunhuang scholars to preserve these valuable cultural artifacts for future generations.
