The Impact of Frequency on Summarization

A. Nenkova and L. Vanderwende

Abstract

Frequency has a significant impact on the study of summarization. Few empirical studies, however, have been carried out to show that frequency is directly related to good summarizer performance or to isolate the contribution made by frequency information from that of other features employed. Here, we examine the impact of frequency on various aspects of summarization: how frequency is used in summarization evaluation methods, how frequency is manifested in human summaries, and finally, the role of frequency in the design of a summarization system. In this paper, we describe SumBasic, a summarization system that exploits frequency exclusively to create summaries. SumBasic performs on par with the summarization systems in the 2004 Document Understanding Conference, and performs very well in the 2005 MultiLingual Summarization Evaluation, suggesting that frequency alone is a powerful feature in summary creation.
