Depth Director: A system for adding depth to movies

Ben Ward, Sing Bing Kang, and Eric Bennett

In this paper, we describe a new interactive system for converting existing 2D footage to stereo. This system, which we call Depth Director, integrates recent advances in computer vision with specialized tools that allow the user to accurately recreate or stylistically manipulate 3D depths. Depth Director assists rotoscoping with temporally coherent segmentation techniques, extracts depths with structure from motion, and uses what we call depth templates to enforce real-world 3D constraints into the system. Through Depth Director’s novel interactive user interface, the user is given as much or as little control as desired to overcome accuracy issues with automatic computer vision algorithms and to manipulate the relative depth contrast between objects.
