Video of Ziria WiFi PHY demo. In this demo one node is sending 1600B packets continuously, with a small gap, and the other node is logging the reception of these packets. Packets are sent at the fixed data rate, first at 6 Mbps and then at 18 Mbps (we currently implemented only BPSK and QPSK modulations). There are no ACKs implemented at the moment and the receiver looks for packet ID in the packets to estimate the number of missed packets. In all cases, the packet reception rate is above 90%. Channel...

FaST-LMM and Windows Azure Put Genetics Research on Faster TrackAlthough researchers are able to collect, store, and analyze tremendous volumes of data, technological and storage limitations can severely impact the speed at which these data can be analyzed. A new algorithm developed by Microsoft Research, FaST-LMM, runs on Windows Azure in the cloud and expedites analysis time—reducing processing periods from years to just days or hours. An early application of FaST-LMM and Windows Azure helps researchers analyze data for the genetic causes of common diseases.

Algorithmic Pricing of Online ServicesCloud computing is a quickly growing business. Questions exist as to the proper business model, and this translates into how to model this, considering auction and game theory. Models exist to purchase on-demand and per-use, as well as to buying in bulk and making longer-term commitments. Regarding supply and demand, marginal costs in cloud computing are among the challenges. External forces, such as electrical costs, are variables out of the control of the hosting company. Another factor is simply time,...

Communication, Computing, and TechnologyMadhu Sudan, principal researcher at Microsoft Research New England, discusses the differences between theoretical computation versus communication. “Communication,” in this context, refers to mobile phones, email, and other messages, while “computation” refers to things one does with a computer. These technologies are interdependent, and currently, one can no longer exist without the other. The contradiction lies in the practice where these technologies are being developed separately, creating missed...
