PHLAT FAQ
Q: I just installed Office 12 Beta or the Vista Beta and now Phlat doesn't work. What's going on?
A: Windows Desktop Search changed substantially for Office 12 & Vista. Unfortunately,
these changes have major implications for the architecture of Phlat. We're working to get Phlat working against the new
version of WDS, but until then, I'm afraid Phlat won't work if you're using the new indexer/search engine.
Q: I'm having trouble with the Windows Desktop Search
indexing. Help?
A: Try checking
here. There’s a ton of good info to help you optimize Windows DS for
your needs.
Q: I just reinstalled Phlat and all my tags
disappeared! How do I get them back?
A: Sometimes when you install a new version of PHLAT,
we need to clear your registry for our settings. Unfortunately, this will also
clear out the list of tags you have. You can repopulate your tags by doing the
following:
- Click the Tools menu and select AutoCheck Tag Tree.
This will systematically iterate through your index to repopulate your tags
into the Phlat interface.
Q: I’ve already tagged a bunch of files and/or email
that are indexed by several computers. How do I get the tag list on my other
computers to reflect show this?
A: Click the Tools menu and select AutoCheck Tag
Tree. This will systematically iterate through your index to repopulate
your tags into the Phlat interface.
Q: I want to search for web pages I've looked at
before. How do get Windows Desktop Search to index my cache?
A: Windows DS makes it a bit tricky to index your
cache. We have found the following works most of the time:
1) Open Windows DS “Desktop Search Options” by right-clicking on the
icon in the system tray.
2) In “Choose what you want to index”, select Custom folders and
click the browse button.
3) In the type-in box at the bottom, type “\\MachineName\c$\
Documents and Settings\Alias\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files”
and click Add and OK. It should now work. You may need to
Rebuild Index to index the old material.
NOTE: We are still working out some bugs related to querying the cache.
Phlat may not return what you expect, and you may not be able to go to the
original web page yet. We are still working on this. Alias in the path above
usually refers to your login user name.
Q: Phlat uses a large amount of processor power every
time I start up, and it can often last for many minutes. What's going on?
A: Whenever Phlat starts up, we have to fill up the
People and Path filters on the fly. This information is not indexed by Windows
DS, so we have to specifically query for it at start up. This can take a while
and is a fairly expensive operation. This is why we recommend that you not exit
Phlat when you have finished a search, but rather just minimize it or click the
close button (X button in the top right--Phlat will just minimize to the
system tray). Once these lists are built, Phlat should be much more respectful
of your processor.
We may change how we maintain these lists in the future, but for now, this is
the only way we could get this functionality working in a short period of time.
Q: When I apply tags to items and then query on those
tags I don't immediately get those items back. Why not?
A: Although we apply the tags to the items immediately,
it can sometimes take a few minutes for the indexer to update and reflect these
changes. Until the indexer has updated, queries for those tags will be
incomplete. This usually happens if your machine is very busy or if you tag a
lot of items at the same time.
Q: I LOVE (or hate) _______ about PHLAT. How do I let
you know?
A: We love getting feedback! In the PHLAT menus, click Help
--> Send Feedback and you can send us mail about your experience.
Note that we may not be able to respond (we get a LOT of mail!), but rest
assured we will do our best to read everything. You can also email us at this
this address.
