Microsoft Research Silicon Valley
Overview
January 2008
Microsoft Corp.’s Silicon Valley research lab was founded in August 2001
by Director Roy Levin and Assistant Director Michael Schroeder. Its work
focuses on advancing the state of the art in distributed systems and related
fields, while strengthening the architecture and technology of Microsoft
products.
As computing networks expand, every enterprise finds itself with an
increasingly complex distributed system, one that needs to be reliable,
scalable and secure. The researchers at the Silicon Valley lab work to
address that need, combining theory with best practices to help solve
problems in the areas of security and privacy, operating systems,
scalability, information sharing, fault tolerance, Web search, data mining,
and system architecture.
Microsoft Research Silicon Valley works with Microsoft business divisions
on the Silicon Valley campus in Mountain View, Calif., and in Redmond, Wash.
These engagements provide the opportunity to examine real-world scenarios
and customer problems and to validate potential solutions. They also reveal
and motivate directions for additional research.
The proximity of Microsoft Research Silicon Valley to Stanford
University, the University of California at Berkeley and University of
California at Santa Cruz enables regular collaboration with graduate
students, professors and other academics. Often the collaborations with
graduate students come in the form of summer internships, during which the
students work alongside full-time employees to solve significant research
problems. Microsoft researchers also collaborate extensively with leading
university research faculty around the world. These collaborations
frequently produce jointly authored papers for leading industry conferences
and refereed journals of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. (IEEE) and other
organizations. Researchers regularly teach advanced courses and seminars at
local universities as well.
