In September, Microsoft became one of the first software companies to create its own computer-science research organization. Microsoft declared that it would support research without regard to product cycles, so there would be new foundations and technology breakthroughs upon which future generations could build.

Rick RashidRick Rashid, currently charged with oversight of Microsoft Research's worldwide operations, left Carnegie Mellon University to start Microsoft Research. During his tenure at Carnegie Mellon, he developed the Mach multiprocessor operating system, which has been influential in the design of many modern operating systems and remains at the core of a number of commercial systems.

Karen Jensen and George Heidorn were hired to start the Natural Language Processing (NLP) group. NLP, now headed by Bill Dolan, has been pivotal in providing many improvements to Microsoft products, including Smart Tags and grammar checkers. The team also has developed MindNet, a knowledge-representation project.
