Microsoft
Research Silicon Valley lab founded in August. Its primary goal is to
advance the state of the art in distributed systems and related fields,
while strengthening the architecture and the technology of Microsoft
products. The lab emphasizes technical excellence, technical breadth and
flexibility, commitment to impact, and collegial interaction among
researchers.
On
Sept. 5, Microsoft Research celebrated its 10th anniversary in Redmond. Microsoft Research technologies including speech, anti-piracy,
user-interface, and developmental software are featured in Office XP.
Jim Gray and Tom Barclay from the BARC lab helped the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) speed its database. The SDSS has built a
database to store about 40 terabytes of raw data from telescopes surveying
the northern sky.
Microsoft Research Cambridge develops Indy, a code name
for a project that changes the way Microsoft groups build network services
by letting them predict the performance of a new system before they deploy
it.
Microsoft Research Cambridge develops advanced
programming-language features (generic types, functional programming
features) that are put into the 2005 edition of Visual Studio®.
Microsoft Research develops advanced watermarking
technology.
