Microsoft Research Asia holds its first annual academic event, Computing
in the 21st Century.
David Heckerman combines probability theory with artificial intelligence
to make PCs aware of users’ needs, such as eliminating junk e-mail, obtaining
tech support without placing a phone call, and the Answer Wizard in Windows®
98; Formation of the Decision Theory and Adaptive Systems Group.
Microsoft
Research Cambridge outgrew its space allocation in the Computer Laboratory
building of the University of Cambridge and applied for planning permission
for a separate building. It also expanded to a second floor in its current
building.
Microsoft joins Internet2 coalition, the
next-generation Internet that can move data at speeds 1,000 times faster
than the fastest communications lines used today.
