TerraServer goes online with one of the world's largest online
databases, providing free public access to maps and aerial photographs of
the United States. TerraServer was built in the BARC lab, established in
1995.
Founded in 1998,
Microsoft's
newest research center in Beijing is expanding rapidly. More than 180
researchers and more than 250 visiting scientists and students are
developing next-generation multimedia applications and Asia-specific
computing.
Jim
Gray won the Association for Computing Machinery’s A.M. Turing Award for his
lifetime of achievement in advancing database research and technology. He
joined fellow researchers Butler Lampson (1992) and Tony Hoare (1980) in an
elite group of winners recognized as innovators in computer science.
Researchers contributed audio and video codecs to the Windows Media
Player to create the best possible quality while achieving high data
compression.
