Microsoft announced the establishment of a £50 million research center in
Cambridge, U.K., with Roger Needham as its first managing director. Its work
focused on programming languages, security, information retrieval, operating
systems, and networking. Research from the Natural Language Processing group
contributed to the grammar checker that shipped in Office 97.
The
first Summer Institute was held, sponsored by the University of Washington
and Microsoft Research. The mission of the annual summit is to chart new
directions in computing, to identify challenges, and to spark innovative
collaborations among the attendees from top research institutions.
Microsoft Research increased its efforts to collaborate with the academic
research community. Today, these efforts are part of the External Research &
Programs team in North America, Latin America, and India; the External
Research Office based in Europe; and the University Relations team based in Asia.
