Jack Breese, David Heckerman, and Eric Horvitz were hired to form the
Decision Theory group, which later split into the Adaptive Systems and
Interaction group and the Machine Learning and Applied Statistics group.
These groups have been responsible for many features in Microsoft products,
including spam filtering, notification systems in Office XP that help
prioritize messages, improvements to search, and digital-ink technology.
The
Speech Technology group was established, under the direction of Xuedong
Huang. This group has improved speech-recognition engines that recognize
spoken dictation and commands for data entry in Office XP. The group also
has made technological contributions to Windows®, Windows CE, Exchange, and
Speech Server.
