Jack Breese, David Heckerman, and Eric Horvitz were hired to form the Decision Theory group, which later split into the Adaptive Systems and Interaction group and the Machine Learning and Applied Statistics group. These groups have been responsible for many features in Microsoft products, including spam filtering, notification systems in Office XP that help prioritize messages, improvements to search, and digital-ink technology.

MicroprocessorThe Speech Technology group was established, under the direction of Xuedong Huang. This group has improved speech-recognition engines that recognize spoken dictation and commands for data entry in Office XP. The group also has made technological contributions to Windows®, Windows CE, Exchange, and Speech Server.
