and Canadian schools. If you are an international student
attending a school outside the U.S. and Canada, you are
not eligible for this fellowship. For information on international

What if I am not completing my second or third year?
The completion of your second to third year is a guideline,
not a stipulation. Strong candidates will be considered
in any portion of their Ph.D. program. However, a thesis
proposal must be submitted as part of your application.
Do I have to be nominated by my university or can
I apply on my own?
To be considered for the program, you must be nominated
by an eligible university or a Microsoft researcher.
Which university departments are eligible to participate?
Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Mathematics
departments at eligible universities may nominate up to
three students per eligible department.
How do I submit my application?
You should apply through the computer science, electrical
engineering, or math department at your school. Your school
contact can find all the necessary information and access
the application tool from the
Microsoft Research Fellowship Web site.
What format should I use for my CV, thesis proposal,
and reference letters?
All required documents must be submitted as individual
documents in Word, PDF, or text-only formats.
How long should my thesis proposal be?
We will accept your thesis proposal in whatever stage you
prefer (full or summary). Our preference is to receive the
most complete information available; however, your proposal
should be between 1.5 and five pages.
When is the deadline for submitting my university
to submit my application online?
All applications must be completed by Tuesday, October 9,
2007 at midnight.
If selected, when will my fellowship begin?
Fellowships awarded in January 2008 will receive their financial
awards beginning in August 2008. Microsoft sends payment
directly to your university and your university will disperse
funds according to their guidelines.
If selected, am I required to complete an internship
at Microsoft Research?
Internships are encouraged, but not required as part of
the award. You may complete a 12-week internship at any
time after the fellowship award in January 2008. For more
information on internships at Microsoft Research, visit
the
Microsoft Research Internship Web site.
If I’m awarded a fellowship, is there an award ceremony
or banquet?
Yes, if selected, you will be invited to visit Microsoft
Research in Redmond in March 2008. Microsoft will cover
your travel expenses and assist in obtaining a visa if needed.
You will also receive a plaque to commemorate your selection
as a Microsoft Research or Microsoft Live Labs Fellow.
Are there any tax implications for me if I receive
this fellowship?
The tax implications for your stipend, fees, and tuition
are based on the policy at your University. However, you
will be responsible for taxes incurred for the value of
your Tablet PC and Microsoft software. A 1099 form stating
the value of your Tablet PC for tax purposes will be sent
to you in time for you to file your income taxes if necessary.
Will intellectual property be an issue if I am awarded
a fellowship?
Microsoft’s Fellowship program is not subject to any intellectual
property (IP) restrictions unless and until the Fellowship
recipient accepts the associated internship. At that time,
you would be required to sign an employee agreement covering
IP worked on during your internship.
Can I simultaneously receive fellowships from other
companies?
If you accept a Microsoft Fellowship, you may not receive
another fellowship from another company for the same academic
period. Fellows accepting multiple fellowships will become
ineligible to receive continued funding from Microsoft Research.
