Microsoft will award two-year fellowships to outstanding Ph.D. students.
Fellowships will be granted by either Microsoft Research or Microsoft Live Labs
at Microsoft’s discretion.
Provisions of the Award
- The fellowship recipient award will cover 100% of the tuition and fees.
- A stipend is provided to cover living expenses while in school ($20,000 for
2008-09).
- A conference and travel allowance is provided for recipients to attend
professional conferences or seminars ($2,000 for 2008-09).
- All recipients will be offered the opportunity to complete a salaried internship
with either Microsoft Research or Microsoft Live Labs in Redmond, Washington.
- Each recipient will be given a Tablet PC pre-loaded with Microsoft software.
- Fellowships are awarded to recipients for two academic years only and are not
available for extension.
Eligibility Criteria
- Preference will be given to students completing their second or third year in a
Ph.D. program.
- Student must attend a U.S. or Canadian university.
- Study in computer science, electrical engineering, or mathematics departments
(if your department is within the scope of these areas, but is titled
differently, you are eligible).
- Maximum of three applicants per department, per university. (For example, if you
have three separate departments as listed above, you may submit up to three
candidates per department or up to nine applicants from your university.)
- Applications will be accepted only if nominated by university department chairs
or their designees.
- The fellowship awards will be made through the university and are not
transferable to another academic institution.

- Applications must include: Thesis proposal, C.V., and three letters of
reference.
- Applications must be submitted online in any
of the following formats: Word document, text-only file, PDF.

- Incomplete applications cannot be considered and notification of incompleteness will not be made. Please make sure applications are complete and are uploaded by 11:59 PM on Tuesday, October 9, 2007.
Application Process
- All fellowship applications must be submitted by eligible university department
chairs or their designee (students may not apply directly).
- All applicants will be notified of award decisions (regardless of outcome) by January 31, 2008.
