Shahram Izadi

I'm interested in developing novel technologies to enable weird and wonderful forms of human-computer interaction beyond the desktop. Essentially this means building, hacking, dismantling and playing with as much technology as possible, and unbelievably getting paid to do so! Some official buzz words would include:

  • Novel user interfaces and input
  • Interactive surfaces
  • Tabletop systems
  • Tangible computing
  • Multi-display environments
  • Novel hardware and sensing techniques for interactive systems
  • Technologies for domains outside the office e.g. the home or public spaces
  • Mobile UIs and infrastructures

“I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it."

Projects (present and past):

ThinSight
This project explores a new technique for optical sensing through thin form-factor displays. It allows for detection of fingers and other physical objects close to or on the display surface. This essentially allows us to turn a regular LCD into a sensing surface that can be used for multi-touch and tangible computing applications. We are interested in both the underlying hardware and software aspects of this approach as well as the interaction techniques and application scenarios it enables.

Applications and interaction techniques for surfaces
We’ve been exploring novel application scenarios and interaction techniques for surfaces including ThinSight and the new Surface computer. Application-wise these include VideoPlay, a tangible way of editing videos on a tabletop, and FamilyArchive, a system which allows the input and safe archiving of both digital and physical media, and allows natural interaction with those media. In terms of interaction techniques we are looking at new ways of detecting and interacting with the Surface using mobile devices, adding physics to UIs, and revisiting the classic problem of scale, rotate and translate.

The Collaborative Slate (C-Slate)
With C-Slate we are exploring how direct input horizontal surfaces can be used for remote collaboration. We have developed new stereo vision techniques for enabling touch input on a large pen-based tablet display, with the ability to recognise everyday physical objects placed on the surface. This enables users to interact with the display very naturally using stylus, hands and tangible objects. We are also developing virtual embodiments of users to enrich the remote collaboration.

Situated appliances for the home
This is an umbrella project that covers some of the novel work that the group does in looking at situated displays and technologies for the home. I’ve been involved with the Whereabouts Clock a situated display for the kitchen wall which displays the general whereabouts of family members using GSM cell information, HomeNote a simple pen-based messaging board for the home, and the PictureBowl a spherical display for loosely managing content on mobile devices.

Dynamo
Dynamo was my PhD thesis work and developed novel interaction techniques, applications and a toolkit to allow co-located people to collaborate and share information fluidly using a combination of large multi-user and input digital surfaces and personal technologies. It explored some of the interesting research questions around supporting multi-input displays, multi-display environments, and techniques for sharing data across heterogeneous systems.

Equator
Equator was a huge and successful project that brought together like-minded thinkers (and drinkers) from eight leading UK universities. I was involved in various threads: In the Citywide experience we designed and developed gaming and mixed reality user experiences that bring together people outdoors with those online. In the Curious Home project, cutting edge technology met design with some interesting ludic consequences.

Speakeasy
The Speakeasy project at PARC brought new human-centred approaches to networked interoperability. The project developed an interconnection technology that enabled digital devices and software services to easily interoperate over both wired and wireless networks. I was fortunate enough to spend two years on the project, hang out with some seriously smart and cool people, and distil some of the results into my thesis work.
